Privacy policy

Short version: this is a publication, not a product. We collect as little as we can get away with and we do not sell anything.

What we collect

Server logs. Standard web server records of requests to the site, including IP address, user agent, requested URL and timestamp. These exist so the site can be operated and abuse can be identified. They are retained for a limited period and are not used to build a profile of you.

Analytics. Aggregate measurement of which pages are read and how people arrive, used to decide what to write next. It is not linked by us to a named individual and we do not attempt to identify visitors.

Email you send us. If you write to [email protected], we keep the message so we can act on it, particularly for corrections where we need a record of what was reported and when.

What we do not do

We do not sell or rent personal data. We do not run advertising networks on this site. We do not require an account, and there is nothing to register for. There is no mailing list.

Cookies

The site sets what is needed to function and to measure traffic in aggregate. Your browser controls whether cookies are accepted, and blocking them will not stop you reading anything here.

Third parties

Pages on this site link to external sources. Following a link takes you to a site with its own privacy practices, over which we have no control.

Where the site loads assets or measurement from a third-party service, that service receives your IP address and user agent as an unavoidable part of serving the request.

Your rights

If you are in the EU or UK, the General Data Protection Regulation gives you rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection over personal data relating to you. If you are a California resident, the CCPA gives you comparable rights, including the right to know what is collected and the right to deletion.

To exercise any of these, write to [email protected]. Given how little we hold, most requests are straightforward.

Retention

Logs and analytics are kept only as long as they are useful for operating and improving the site. Correspondence is kept while a matter is open and for a reasonable period afterwards so that corrections remain traceable.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the change is made here with a dated note.

Questions, corrections and requests under any of the above go to [email protected], which is the only address this site uses.
